Headline: NZ Card Spending Edges Up 0.2% in October, Hinting at Stabilizing Retail Demand

New Zealand’s retail sector showed a slight improvement in October, with seasonally adjusted electronic card transactions rising 0.2% month on month. The lift follows a September decline and points to a cautiously stabilizing trend in consumer spending across the payments ecosystem.

The monthly uptick comes after a 0.5% fall in September. On an annual basis, actual card spending was up 0.8% compared with a year earlier, easing from a 1.0% gain previously. While the direction is positive, the momentum remains modest as households continue to navigate elevated borrowing costs and tighter budgets, tempering discretionary purchases.

Electronic card transactions capture roughly two-thirds of core retail activity, making them a timely barometer for retail sales and payments volume. October’s result suggests consumer demand is levelling out rather than rebounding, offering a cautiously constructive signal for retailers and payment providers heading into the coming months.

Key Points – Electronic card transactions rose 0.2% month on month in October (seasonally adjusted). – The increase follows a 0.5% decline in September. – Annual card spending was up 0.8% year on year, easing from 1.0% previously. – Household spending remains restrained by high borrowing costs and tight budgets. – Card transactions represent about two-thirds of core retail activity. – Data indicates stabilizing, but still subdued, consumer demand in New Zealand.
